Course Description

This course is designed to introduce health care practitioners to the principles and application of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).

This course is the first in a series and will cover the basic techniques used to apply research evidence to everyday clinical decision making. These principles and skills will allow the student to apply current best practice evidence immediately and improve clinical decision making and clinical practice. The course will incorporate self-guided text lectures, demonstrations, practice assignments, and a final exam is to be completed at the conclusion of the course.

This course is designed for learners who are Beginners or are Advanced Beginners in using EBP principles.

Teaching methods for this course will incorporate self-guided text lectures, demonstrations, practice assignments, and a final exam is to be completed at the conclusion of the course.

Course Goal: To be able to critically analyze research literature to enhance clinical decision making

Upon completion of this interactive online course, the learner will be able to:

  • Define the 5 Steps of EBP

  • Describe the keys of EBP in clinical decision making

  • Describe steps in applying principles of EBP to clinical decision making

  • Identify and construct a clinical question using the PICO method

  • Identify available electronic databases to review research

  • Perform basic interpretation of research results to answer clinical questions
